AEO vs GEO vs SEO: What Each One Actually Buys You

The acronyms multiply faster than the ideas behind them. SEO, then AEO, then GEO, and now sales decks adding a fourth. Each one gets pitched as the thing that replaces the last, which is convenient if you are selling the new one and confusing if you are trying to decide where an hour of work should go.

They are not stages in a replacement cycle. They are different jobs on the same page, and it is worth being blunt about what each one actually buys you before you spend on any of them.

Each Acronym Buys You One Verb

The clearest way to hold these apart is by the verb each one earns.

SEO makes a page eligible. It gets the page crawled, indexed, and ranked for a query. Nothing else happens until this does, because every downstream system, including the AI ones, starts from a search index. This is the floor.

AEO, answer engine optimization, makes the answer extractable. A page can rank and still be useless to an answer engine if the answer is buried, hedged, or spread across three paragraphs of setup. AEO is the work of making the specific answer liftable as a self-contained unit.

GEO, generative engine optimization, makes the brand citeable. It is the work of getting a model to quote your page and name you in a generated answer, which turns on specificity, attribution, and concrete claims more than on keywords.

Agentic commerce adds a fourth verb: complete. When an agent can transact, the question is no longer whether it cites you but whether it can finish a task using your page: read your price, understand your terms, act. That verb is early, but it is the direction of travel.

The Verbs Stack, They Do Not Compete

Here is the part the replacement narrative gets wrong. You do not pick one. The verbs stack, and each depends on the one below it.

A page that is citeable but does not rank is a page no model retrieves. A page that ranks but hides its answer gives an answer engine nothing to extract. You cannot skip the floor to buy the penthouse.

The encouraging consequence is that the underlying work overlaps heavily. A claim that is specific, attributed, dated, and self-contained ranks better, extracts cleaner, and gets cited more. The GEO research paper measured exactly this: the edits that helped most were adding citations, quotations, and concrete statistics, and keyword stuffing performed poorly. That is one set of edits serving three verbs.

After:

Wrivio rewrites text in a Windows overlay opened with Ctrl+Shift+Space. The free tier has no time limit; Pro is €7 per month as of August 2026.

The second version ranks for a real query, hands an answer engine something to extract, and gives a model a fact to cite. The first does none of the three, because it says nothing checkable.

When To Care About Each One

You do not need all four at once. Sequence them by where you actually are.

If your pages are not crawlable or not ranking, that is the only problem worth working on. Fix SEO first; the rest is decoration on a page nobody retrieves. This is also where zero-click search bites, because ranking no longer guarantees a visit.

If you rank but never get quoted, your answers are probably buried. That is an AEO problem: front-load the answer, make each section’s first sentence stand alone.

If you get quoted but never named, or a competitor gets the citation, that is GEO: make your claims specific enough that yours is the one worth attributing. The mechanics are in generative engine optimization: what actually works.

Care about the fourth verb when agents that transact are actually loading your pages, and not a day before. As of August 2026 that is a small slice of traffic for most sites.

Do Not Buy A Score Dashboard For Any Of Them

The predictable product for each acronym is a dashboard that reports a proprietary score. Be skeptical of all of them.

No public documentation from any assistant vendor describes a score you can optimize against. A tool that reports one has invented a proxy and is selling you the proxy. That does not make the tools useless, but it means the number is a made-up abstraction, and steering your content to move a made-up number is how you end up with pages tuned for a metric instead of a reader.

Measure the thing you actually want: does your page rank, does it get extracted, does the assistant name you when it answers your topic. Those are observable without a subscription.

A Wrivio Context for making a page serve all three verbs could say:

Rewrite this so the main answer appears in the first two sentences, every claim is self-contained, and every figure carries its source or date in the same sentence. Keep every name, date, figure, price, and commitment exactly as written. Do not add statistics, sources, or claims that are not in the original.

Press Ctrl+Shift+Space, paste the section, and check the diff. Confirm the lead sentence now answers the query and that no number was invented in the process.

The Short Version

SEO gets you eligible. AEO gets you extracted. GEO gets you cited. Agentic commerce, eventually, gets you transacted with. They are one page doing four jobs, built from mostly the same honest, specific writing, and none of them is bought by chasing a vendor’s private score.

Common Questions

What is the difference between SEO, AEO, and GEO?

SEO makes a page eligible to rank in search, AEO makes the answer on that page extractable by an answer engine, and GEO makes the brand citeable so a generative model quotes and names you; they stack rather than replace each other.

Do I need all three?

You build them in order: fix ranking first because everything downstream starts from a search index, then make your answers extractable, then make your claims specific enough to be cited; skipping the floor wastes the rest.

What is the fourth verb people mention?

Complete: with agentic commerce an agent can transact on your behalf, so the question shifts from whether it cites your page to whether it can finish a task using it, though as of August 2026 that is early for most sites.

Should I buy an AEO or GEO scoring tool?

Be cautious, because no assistant vendor publishes a score you can optimize against, so any proprietary number is an invented proxy; measure observable outcomes like whether you rank, get extracted, and get named instead.
