The Browse-to-Buy Gap and Your Writing
One of the strangest numbers of 2026 is the gap between how much web traffic AI agents drove and how little of it reached checkout. Agents accounted for a large share of visits, yet only a small percentage of agent sessions ended in a purchase. The industry read this as a plumbing problem, and some of it is: checkout standards are still settling. But a meaningful slice of the gap is a writing problem, and that part you can fix today.
For the plumbing side, see our explainer on the agentic commerce protocol and the analysis of why in-chat AI checkout stalled. This piece is about the copy.
Why Agents Browse But Do Not Buy
An agent abandons when it cannot confirm the thing its user asked for. If the instruction was “under $150, arrives Friday, size 9”, and your page does not state the price in text, the delivery estimate, or the size availability clearly, the agent cannot verify it meets the constraints. Faced with uncertainty, an agent does the safe thing: it does not buy, or it picks a competitor whose facts were legible.
So a large part of the gap is not reluctance. It is pages that a person could have figured out but an agent could not, because the deciding facts were in an image, behind a tab, or implied rather than stated.
Make The Deciding Facts Checkable
Every constraint a buyer might set is a fact your page must state in plain text for an agent to confirm. Price, total price including shipping, delivery window, size and stock, return policy. Each one you leave ambiguous is a reason for an agent to stop. The schema.org Offer vocabulary exists precisely to state price and availability in a form a machine can read, which is worth pairing with plain text.
Before:
In stock. Fast, free shipping on most orders. See cart for final pricing.
After:
In stock in US sizes 7 to 12. $139 total, free shipping, arrives in 2 business days to US addresses. Free returns within 30 days.
The second version lets an agent confirm “under $150, arrives Friday, size 9” without guessing. The first forces three guesses, and an agent that has to guess usually stops.
Write The Reassurance A Person Would Need Too
The constraints an agent checks are the same ones a human hesitates over: will it arrive in time, can I return it, is this the real total. Writing them plainly closes the gap for both readers at once. You are not writing for machines instead of people; you are writing the facts people also wanted and too many pages hide.
A Wrivio Context for a product or checkout page could say:
Rewrite this so every purchase-deciding fact is stated in plain text: total price including shipping, delivery window, stock by size, and return policy. Keep all figures exact. Remove anything that defers a fact to “see cart” or an image.
Press Ctrl+Shift+Space, paste the page, and check the diff for any deferred or implied fact.
Do Not Bet The Business On It Yet
Be honest about scale. Agent purchasing is real and growing, but it is still a small share of sales for most businesses, and the standards are moving. Write parseable pages because they help human buyers now and position you for agents later, not because agentic checkout is about to replace your funnel. Common Questions
Why do AI agents browse so much but buy so little?
Partly unsettled checkout standards, and partly pages where the deciding facts are not stated in plain text. An agent that cannot confirm price, delivery, size, or returns against its user’s constraints usually declines to buy.
What is the single most common blocker in copy?
A total price the agent cannot see, because it is deferred to the cart or shown only in an image. An agent cannot confirm “under $150” against a price it cannot read, so it stops or picks a clearer competitor.
Does fixing this help human buyers too?
Yes. The facts an agent checks, total price, delivery, stock, returns, are exactly the ones a human hesitates over. Stating them plainly closes the gap for both readers at once.
Should I prioritise agent-ready copy now?
Prioritise it because it helps human conversion today and costs little, not because agentic checkout is about to dominate. It is still a small share of sales for most businesses, and the standards are moving.
